Thoroughly Modern Traditions: Christmas Ornaments

Like many bloggers out there, one of my favorite parts of the holidays is decorating the Christmas tree. For myself, I know that this is in large part due to my collection of Christmas ornaments that have been accumulating since I was born.

Almost every ornament has a special memory. There are the beautiful, glass balls that relatives bought for me when I was born; the ballerina ornaments my Granny Wellman seemed to buy for me in bulk; the "granddaughter" Hallmark ornaments that came without fail, every year, from Grandma Eide; and of course, many ornaments from my parents. My mom made sure to save them all, and she gave them to me for me and Matt's first Christmas together.

As an adult, the tradition continues. Matt and I spend some time every year trying to select a meaningful ornament. Our first year, we received many personalized ornaments through our wedding guestbook.

In 2013, we found the most adorable puppy ornament--it was the year Millie came home to us! Lastly, in 2014, we picked out an ornament while traveling in New Orleans for our first anniversary.

This year, I'm hoping we will find the time to take a little day trip and pick out an ornament in Old Towne Alexandria. Matt and I actually visited the area for the first time on the day we found out we were pregnant. I felt so many emotions that day, and I remember standing in a crowded shop, staring at Christmas decorations and trying to decide if I should go ahead and buy the ornament. Since I am a little stitious, I decided to hold off. Although there are still a number of things that could go wrong (which I have to remind myself not to think about every day), I still want to go back for that ornament. So much has already changed in the past six months, and I know it will be the perfect addition to our tree this year to commemorate all that has happened.

Next year, I'm looking forward to not only picking out another ornament for our family, but starting Aida's collection as well. What are some of your favorite holiday traditions? Remember, if you follow along and use the #ThoroughlyModernTraditions, you could win a Kate Spade mug and Starbucks gift card! See the original post for details.

p.s. I'm not forgetting about #JAMpackedholiday! Today's song is "Cry Baby" by the Neighbourhood. It will make you feel like you're listening to an Indie boy band and I love it.

All Love,
